Self Care Depression Program
What is the Self Care Depression Program?
The Self Care Depression Program (SCDP) is an instructional program designed to help individuals struggling with symptoms of depression without the high cost of individual therapy. The program teaches participants new skills to reactivate their lives, change negative thinking patterns, help manage stress and solve problems more effectively. Materials are presented over nine weeks during ninety minute sessions.
Who would benefit from the SCDP?
The SCDP has assisted hundreds of individuals struggling with depression. The program is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which has been shown, in clinical trials, to be as effective as medication treatment for depression.

Self Care Depression Program Session Guide
Session 1: Introduction Session
We will discuss how depression can be viewed as a result of complex interactions between many factors in a person's life: thoughts, emotions, behaviours, physiology, and current life situations. We will focus on how interventions designed to address each individual factor can produce positive change in all other factors.
Session 2: Behavioural Activation
This session focuses on the relationship between activity levels, motivation, and depression. The aim is to develop a plan to begin to reactivate your life.
Session 3: Stress Management/Relaxation
This session discusses the connection between stress and depression. Group members are taught how to monitor their stress levels, and relaxation techniques are provided to assist in actively reducing one's stress levels.
Session 4: Problem Solving
Depression is often the result of real life problems that have become overwhelming. This session focuses on strategies for solving problems more effectively, thinking about problems more realistically, and learning how to set appropriate goals.
Sessions 5-8: Thinking Realistically
In these sessions, group members will learn the tenets of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Members will explore current thinking patterns that influence how they interpret events, and consequently behave. Group members will learn how to challenge depressive thinking patterns with more realistic or alternative interpretation of events.
Session 9: The Road Ahead
This session focuses on reviewing the gains made, with recommendations for continued success and relapse prevention.
